1. Lupe Tortillas Mexican Restaurant – The Original

Lupe Tortillas Mexican Restaurant - The Original
Address318 Stafford St, Houston, TX 77079
Websitewww.tex-mex.com
Our RecommendationFajitas Grandioso

Located just off the freeway, Lupe Tortillas is a popular stop spot. In total, they now have 4 locations across Texas. We chose to visit the original to see all the fuss was about.

It’s a family-orientated restaurant, bustling full of families and happy diners. The vibe inside is exciting, and there is always plenty going on. Although it appears small from the outside, it is, in fact, pretty spacious once you get inside, so it’s a great spot to choose, even if you’re out with a bigger group of people.

The fajitas were out of this world. There are plenty of fillings to choose from, and the meats are all cooked exceptionally.

You can choose to build your own fajita or pick one of the four options already on the menu, such as our recommendation, the fajitas grandioso, which, although it serves 2-3 people, left 4 of us nicely full. It had just the right amount of spice, and even though one of the group wasn’t a spice lover, thoroughly enjoyed it and said it wasn’t overpowering on heat.

There is a vegetarian menu, including a veggie option on the fajita menu.

The price is perhaps the one thing that may put off some diners. Despite the fantastic food and the portions extra-large, the price was relatively high. The cheapest fajita on the menu was the smallest chicken one, $20.95. Some of them went up as high as $91.95, so if you’re thinking of paying these guys a visit, be prepared to put your hand in your pocket, although we can guarantee you won’t be disappointed with the food.

2. Pappasitos

Pappasitos
Address2515 S Loop W, Houston, TX 77054
Websitewww.pappasitos.com
Our RecommendationBeef Fajita, Jalapeño Cheese Sausage & Shrimp Diablo

Pappasito’s is the second-largest of all the family-operated restaurant companies in the United States, and it all originated back in 1897 with the family’s Great-Grandfather.

These family restaurants offer different cuisines offering good-quality food and excellent service aimed to create a brilliant dining experience. This is made very clear from the moment you enter Pappasito’s by the attentive staff and the warm greeting.

The restaurant and menu are themed, giving an enjoyable feeling to your visit. The menu is exciting and full of fresh and inviting dishes.

The fajitas here will blow your mind. The meat used in them is of a very high standard and cooked expertly. The beef fajita with jalapeno sausage and shrimp diablo was out of this world. The presentation was grand and made your mouth water when it arrived at the table.

There are options for everyone here, including gluten-free, vegetarian, children, and families.

They also have a great choice of drinks, including cocktails, wines, and soft drinks.

As well as the inviting themed dining room, they also have an outdoor patio area, which is perfect if you want to eat Al Fresco.

3. Escalante’s Mexican Grill Houston

Escalante's Mexican Grill Houston
Address12821 Kimberley Ln, Houston, TX 77024
Websitewww.escalantes.net
Our RecommendationFajita Famosa Combo

Since opening in 1993, Escalante’s has become a popular choice for Tex-Mex food in Houston. They now have 6 locations across Texas in total.

They are very well-known for getting involved in local charities and holding events to contribute to the community.

This kindness continues into the service you receive once inside the restaurant, as well as the friendly staff. The whole atmosphere inside feels warm and welcoming. The walls are painted with scenic and cheerful artwork, and the grand arches and pillars give the place an excellent feel.

The dishes were presented well, vibrant in color, and garnished with lovely side salads. The fajitas themselves were exceptional. They come in a choice of four sizes, from small to family-size, plus a choice of either chicken, beef, or a combo of each.

They start from $19.00 and are anything up to $79.00 for the family sharing option. The plates were packed full of well-seasoned meat, plenty of spicy sauces and vegetables, and truly hit the spot. There was certainly more than enough for everyone to share.

There is a children’s menu here and a few vegetarian options, but perhaps not the place to go for vegans. The fajitas themselves only have meat options on the menu, but the staff were friendly enough and would be likely to accommodate you if you requested a veggie option, so don’t be shy to ask.

They also have a good selection of drinks and desserts, should you wish to end your meal on a sweet note.

4. Chuy’s

Chuy's
Address2706 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77098
Websitewww.chuys.com
Our Recommendation:Chicken Fajitas

The original Chuys first started back in 1982, opening up inside an old abandoned Texas BBQ joint on Barton Springs Road in Austin, Texas.

Eventually, Chuys was born to be the fun, funky, on-trend Tex-Mex restaurant that now brings fantastic authentic food and a fabulous atmosphere to the people of Houston.

Although they call themselves a mainly “Tex-Mex” restaurant, their ingredients and recipes come from across all of New Mexico, while their fajita seasoning is an old South Texas family recipe.

Their fajitas are served with a handmade tortilla which is freshly made to order using a comal. With this, you get a choice of beef, chicken, or a combination marinated in their signature blend of “Shiner Bock Beer,” serrano peppers, lime juice, and secret spices. Finished off with peppers and onions, lettuce, guac, sour cream, Mexican rice, pico de gallo, and refried beans.

The meat was all cooked perfectly, there was plenty of food with every portion, the homemade pico was fresh and zesty, and the refried beans were lovely and steaming hot. The combination together was a delicious meal.

The price of the fajitas was just $16.29, an excellent price for a significant portion of food.

As in a similar theme to the other restaurants in our guide, there was no option for a vegetarian or a vegan fajita, but other items were on the menu suited to these preferences.

5. Irmas

Irmas
Address22 N Chenevert St, Houston, TX 77002
Websitewww.irmasoriginal.com
Our RecommendationBeef Fajitas

If you’re looking for a destination where you’re guaranteed to get a truly authentic Mexican experience, then Irmas is the place for you.

Started from scratch in 1988 by Irma herself, she has made her restaurant a brilliant place to meet and eat, showing a passion and dedication to every plate that leaves the kitchen.

The restaurant itself is small and quirky. Although it may not be the best choice for larger groups, it is still definitely worth a visit. There is so much to look at inside the restaurant, such as artwork, memorabilia, and trinkets. It feels like an Aladdin’s cave in Mexico.

The unfortunate element about this venue is that upon being seated in the restaurant, you are not given a menu; this, therefore, means that you’re unable to estimate how much your bill will be. It is very easy to get overcharged here if you’re not careful. So make sure you insist on getting your menu before you place any orders to avoid any startling billing errors.

All being well with the bill, though, you will not regret trying the fajitas here at Irma’s, the skirt steak used to put together the beef one cooked lovely, using just the right amount of spice. The size is average, and you can easily finish your plate, but nobody left hungry, and everyone was pleasantly humbled with the whole experience, as well as the food received.

6. Picos Restaurant

Arnaldo Richards' Picos Restaurant
Address3601 Kirby Dr, Houston, TX 77098
Websitewww.picos.net
Our RecommendationFajitas Al Carbon

Picos offers a unique menu of authentic Mexican dishes that are creative and capture the true tastes of Mexico—celebrating the fantastic cuisines found throughout the multiple regions of Mexican food.

It’s a great choice to take the family, due to the upbeat and lively atmosphere. They also have a children’s menu available.

The fajitas are fantastic. The chicken fajita comes on a sizzling platter with the crispy chicken skin still on, which just makes the dish a little bit more exceptional. The sirloin steak fajitas were also excellent. If you want to try a bit of both, which is recommended, then opt for the combo.

If you visit on a Monday night, they have a discount on fajitas, so if you’re looking for something more suited to a lower budget, this could be a good option for you.

The prices here are average to high, for the portion for one fajita, they will cost £32.00. But you do get a lot of food for your money.

When it comes to any vegetarians or vegans dining with you, once again, there was no option with regards to the fajitas. Still, the menu is exceptionally vast, and there are plenty of other options to choose from.

They also offer delivery and curbside pick-up for all items on the menu.

They also run a Happy Hour (be sure to check times with the restaurant beforehand.) During Happy Hour, you can get discounted meals and drinks such as burgers and tacos, beers, and cocktails.
